Dr Vladimir Vaks MBBS PhD DSc – Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology 

Lead Consultant in Community Diabetes

Dr Vaks qualified MBBS, with Honours, from Kemerovo Medical Academy in Russia in 1989. His clinical training in endocrinology and diabetes took place in the Russian Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes in Moscow.  A PhD was awarded in 1995 after clinical research on non-functioning pituitary adenomas. He was awarded the Diploma and Gratuity for the best scientific work among young scientists in 1996, and was granted State Scientific Stipendium by The Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2000-2003. He was appointed Consultant Endocrinologist at the Russian Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes in 1995, and a Reader in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy in 2004. Dr Vaks has published over 120 research papers and reviews on different endocrine problems and diabetes.

He immigrated to the UK in 2005, and has had an additional extensive training in Diabetes/Endocrinology in London (Barts and The London NHS Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust). Before taking the current post Dr Vaks has been a lead Consultant at Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism for over 3 years. Dr Vaks’s clinical interests include diabetes education, antenatal diabetes/endocrinology, insulin pump therapy, new antidiabetes therapy, pituitary adenomas, thyroid pathology, andrology and erectile dysfunction.

His current goal is to further develop community diabetes service in Swindon. Along with his hospital duties at GWH as a consultant in diabetes/endocrinology he also runs weekly rapid-access community diabetes clinics, joint practice-based diabetes clinics, provide practice-based education and training in diabetes for Health Care Professionals, and advice and guidance service in diabetes.
